Assessments
General assessment information
I use a “multi-trait, multi-method” approach when conducting assessments. This involves casting a wide net in order to capture as much information as is reasonable, and results in valid and reliable evidence-based conclusions. I write in non-technical language to increase the likelihood that my conclusions will be understood and used as intended. Assessments can be combined (e.g., psychodiagnostic and forensic criminal). I have been designated an expert witness by the Supreme Court of BC and am willing to testify.
Psychodiagnostic assessments
Psychodiagnostic assessments address the question of whether the examinee has enough symptoms of a disorder (or disorders) to meet diagnostic criteria for a disorder. Examples include anxiety disorders (phobias, general anxiety, panic), depressive disorders (major depressive disorder), posttraumatic disorders (adjustment disorder, PTSD, complex PTSD), and personality disorders (e.g., antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, etc.). My psychodiagnostic assessments can help settle questions such as “what psychological diagnoses are present (if any) and what’s the best way to proceed from here?”
Forensic (criminal)
I conduct assessments of general, violent, and/or sexual recidivism of men in conflict with the law. In risk assessments where the individual is at the beginning of a sentence, I make treatment recommendations about the intensity of correctional treatment indicated, identify treatment targets, and comment on characteristics of the individual that treatment providers should take into account in order to maximize treatment benefit.
Forensic (medical legal)
Medical legal assessments are almost always psychodiagnostic for third parties (e.g., the courts, insurers, HR departments). These are usually intended to answer a question such as, “does the examinee have any psychological disorder(s), and, if so, what likely caused it/them?” I also include treatment recommendations where appropriate.
